Yawatahama City in Ehime Prefecture has long been known as a place where citrus cultivation thrives. Terraced fields facing the Uwa Sea, sunlight reflecting off the water, and a mild climate—these unique natural conditions have nurtured a rich citrus culture in the region. Within this region, the Kunigi district is particularly well-suited not only for Satsuma mandarins but also for Chubankan, mid-to-late-season citrus varieties such as Kanpei and Ehime Kashi No. 28. The temperature difference between day and night, combined with well-drained soil, imparts a deep, complex sweetness and firm, dense flesh to the fruit. The rich flavor is the result of the soil’s ability to store nutrients along with meticulous water management that aims to preserve the citrus fruit’s natural acidity rather than simply pursuing high sugar content. With every bite, these citrus fruits—unique to Yawatahama and Kunigi—quietly tell the story of this region’s abundance.
